1st - 3rd December 2011 at 7.30pm Turnage | McGregor | Wallinger — UNDANCE
A world premiere by Olivier Award-winning choreographer Wayne McGregor – “one of the most celebrated and sought-after choreographers of his generation” New York Times.
Inspired by American sculptor Richard Serra’s List of Verbs and the work of photographer Eadweard J. Muybridge, UNDANCE is
about undoing, unraveling, unwinding… “I thought it would be
interesting to enact these action verbs – like To Roll, To Wrap, To
Slide – and not know where they are going but just do them and see what
comes up – Undo them” Wayne McGregor.
Danced by ten breathtaking performers from Wayne McGregor│Random Dance, with a brand new bluesy, action-filled score by internationally acclaimed composer Mark-Anthony Turnage (Anna Nicole), UNDANCE features a set by Turner prize-winning visual artist Mark Wallinger, costumes by Moritz Junge and lighting by Lucy Carter.
For the first part of the evening, McGregor directs mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly, immersing her in a spectacular 3D environment created by New York digital artists OpenEnded Group – in a new staging of Turnage’s emotional chamber opera Twice Through the Heart.
Both works feature a live orchestra, handpicked by Mark-Anthony Turnage and conducted by Tim Murray.
This new opera is a haunting, beautiful story of love, belief and revenge.
In a London suburb, four young men and
women are preparing to die for their faith. In their final days they
are visited by the ghost of Babur, first Emperor of the Mughal Dynasty;
a sophisticated artist and ruthless warrior, who praises God in poetry
as he recounts his glorious deeds. As their mission draws closer, he
urges his companions to escape the violent cycle of history and look to a
more hopeful future.
Combining the contemporary poetry of Jeet Thayil and original music by Edward Rushton, Babur in London explores the complexities of faith and multiculturalism in modern day society.

The Gershwins' ® Porgy and Bess℠
Cape Town Opera
UK Tour, 6th June - 21st July
To mark 75 years since George Gershwin’s tragically early death, Cape
Town Opera performs this exuberantly colourful staging of the great
American songwriter’s immortal ‘folk opera’ Porgy and Bess.
A jazzy fusion of classical opera and Broadway musical, boasting some
of the most unforgettable melodies in the song repertoire – including
‘Summertime’ and ‘It Ain’t Necessarily So’ – Porgy and Bess is not only America’s greatest opera but the only opera fully to embrace the African-American experience.
Originally set among the teeming black community of Catfish Row, a
run-down tenement in 1920s South Carolina, the opera tells of the
crippled beggar Porgy’s desperate attempts to rescue the beautiful Bess
from her twin dependency upon her violent lover Crown and the sleazy
dope-dealer Sportin’ Life.
Created to celebrate Cape Town Opera’s 10th anniversary in 2009, this
vibrantly physical production brilliantly highlights the work’s
universal and enduring message by shifting the action to apartheid-era
Soweto.
